Business:
Orca Ocean Liners was started in the 1960s when the term Orca was used more. The company is a cruise line started in Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Nova Scotia, Canada. Orca Ocean liners was started because there were not very many cruise lines in the area that provided whale watching while on the cruises. 1) The first article, Vital Tips for Effective Design is broken into 7 different sections. The first, what is a logo, describes the use for a logo. The main goal of a logo is to identify. The second section, what makes a good logo, explains that a logo needs to be distinctive, good graphics, and appropriate to the company it's for. The next part is the process of design. This is talking about the steps you take when designing a logo. It goes on to talk about the briefing, research, sketching, revision, and presentation. It then talks about the 5 principles of design which are simple, memorable, timeless, versatile, and appropriate. Then the article says that when talking about price the designer should make a personal quote for the client. The last part is about choosing a designer. Things to consider are experience, time frame, and price among other things.
2) The second article is about 10 Common Mistakes In Logo Design. The first is Designed by an Amateur. When looking for a designer do not make the mistake of finding an amateur designer because your design will look like it and it will be representing your company. Next is Designing based on trends. Trends do not last forever, therefore your logo will also fade. Logos should always be timeless. The third is not using raster imaging. Vector graphics are more ideal because they use mathematics so they are sharp and clean when up close. This helps with reproduction of the logo. Next is not using stock art. This can be some companies downfall. Logos should be original and not contain stock art because of copyright issues. Fifth is not designing for yourself. You should be designing for the client not yourself. If you like something you can't use it for anything, it needs to fit the needs. Sixth is don't design overly complex logos. The detail won't show up. Next is don't rely on color for the logo. Eighth is poor choice of font. The font should represent that of the company. Type should reflect the characteristics of the logo. Nine is too many fonts. There shouldn't be a whole slew of typefaces. If you want to have different type than you can change it if there are many typefaces in one family. Tenth is copying and self explanatory.

3) The third article is all about spotting hidden images in different logos. There's an arrow in FEDEX, In the tostitos logo has 2 people sharing chips and salsa. The Tour de France has a man riing a bike. Amazon has an arrow pointing from a to z saying that it has everything from a to z. The Chocolate kisses has a hershey kiss between the k and i. There is a bear in the toblerone logo. The bigten logo has an eleven for penn state being the eleventh member. Northwest airling has an N and W in it. These all use negative space and illusion to put these things into their logos.

I've decided to go with Orca Ocean Liners as the name of my business because I think that it flows, its marketable, it pertains to my animal, and it received a good amount of points.

Research

In my research I looked up a whale watching company that could take on this logo. It is the Bar Harbor Whale Watching Tour. They are located in Bar Harbor Maine. They have a website that tells all of the details of the tours. I also found a cruise line called San Juan Cruises. They actually already have the killer whale as part of their logo. While on the tour you can go whale watching. They also have a website to promote their business. My third company I looked into is the Fresh Water Filter Company. The killer whale could be the logo by showing that fresh water is represented by the waves splashing against the whale.
