My topic is gun control. Currently in the United States it is legal for citizens to own a gun provided they have a license. The second amendment states that people have the right to bear and keep arms. Some facts that I have found on gun control relate to the fact that it is a good and bad thing depending on who you are. One source that had vital information is
dosomething.org. One fact about Americans is that 70 to 80 million of them own guns. As of now 39 states permit people to own a concealed weapon if they have a license as of 2011. One fact that I found interesting is that there is no law against minors gaining access to guns. Another source that was vital is
guncontroldebate.net The site was able to give a clear understanding of the matter without showing bias towards one side or the other. The debate over gun control has been one that has been more prevalent over the last 40 years. The 1990s amendment added a little bit more control but not complete domination over the law. It required that all people who purchased a gun were required to get a background check. The whole debate is based on the fact that gun-owners want their freedom to own a gun, but in the wrongs hands guns can be very dangerous and harmful, especially if a child is involved.
Something that seemed relavant to our times is what all of the presidential candidates think about gun control. According to fox.com practically all of the candidates either support or own a gun. Gabrielle Giffords on the other hand, urged that the government restrict access as to who is able to own a gun. It is interesting to see that even our government officials cannot always agree on what is right for the country. I can't understand why there is no agreement that can be made between the groups. Gifford's view might be the only plausible solution. Only certain people could own guns with restrictions.
My goal is to bring both arguments together. I want both sides to see the effects gun control. I might do this just by an image because the topic is strong in dealing with deaths. I think I also might be able to show each side that the other viewpoint is valid too and has valid consequences. I think if I could find or create an image that is stirring enough it would get the message across. I think gun control is a very debatable topic and hopefully I can bring to opposing groups together.
